What a busy week we had at Funtime! We celebrated Chinese New Year this week. Happy year of the dragon.

This week we in the pre-k class we started practicing writing and math everyday. Last semester, we had Monday Math and Wednesday writing. Of course we use math and writing skills in a lot of different ways throughout our week.

This week in the Butterfly class, we started focusing on one letter per week. Last semester, we worked on letter and number recognition as a whole group and working with multiple letters at a time.

On Monday & Tuesday, we made really cool dragon puppets. The kids had a lot of fun painting their dragon, then we stapled streamers on for the tail. It was really fun to watch the kids use the puppets and make the tails move. The Butterfly class talked about the letter L. The Dragonfly class talked about money. We talked about the name of each coin, what it looked like and how much it was worth. I used large paper replicas of coins for this exercise.

Wednesday was more Chinese New Year. The Dragonfly class completed 2 worksheets about money. We did these together as a whole group. I sent one worksheet home in-complete, feel free to complete it together at home. I brought in real coins today and again we talked about the names and how much each one was worth. I passed them around and the kids got to feel them and look at them closely. (I even had a $ .50 piece in my collection... they liked that one!) We worked on the letter Ii for writing. The kids have been working really hard on writing their names - they are doing such a great job! I'm really proud of them! For craft we practiced our scissor skills by making lanterns for Chinese New Year.

Thursday and Friday - I think these are the kids favorite days of the week - Gym day! The Caterpillars are so darn cute - every week they want to get the balls out. I open the door to the storage and show them all the fun stuff we have and offer a bunch of choices... they just shake their head at every one and say "we want the balls" or "Ms. Lisa, just get the balls out." They really are creatures of habit, eh? So once again, the Caterpillar class played with the balls in the gym. The Butterfly class played duck, duck, goose. Their faces are so fun to watch as they run around the circle - pure delight! The Dragonfly class played a game called 4 corners and freeze tag. We had a lot of fun with all the classes. I love to run around and play with them in the gym!

We had a great week in Funtime this week! Next week we talk about Ground Hog Day... can you believe that it's already February next week?

Welcome!

A great big welcome to our new students and welcome back to our returning students. It's so nice to see everybody after our long break. I am thrilled that the kids are so excited to be back at Funtime - their enthusiasm is catching!

This week we talked about Martin Luther King Jr. We discussed how Dr. King wanted to live in a world where everybody was friends. With the pre-k kids, we talked about how kids with dark colored skin and kids with light or white colored skin didn't even go to the same schools, ride the same bus or use the same drinking fountain. But today, because Dr. King believed it could happen and started the ball rolling, kids with all different colors of skin all go to the same school. With the younger kids, we talked about friendship and how in our class we are all friends. For craft we glued 2 different colored hands onto a piece of paper with a quote from Dr. King.
The pre-k class practiced writing the letter Ll.

Thursday and Friday are always gym days. The kids look forward to it all week. On Thursday the 9am class (caterpillars) played with the big fit balls, they had fun bouncing, kicking and rolling off of the balls. The 10:15am class (butterflies) started their gym time by playing with the balls and then Ms. Sedeane taught them a couple of new, fun games.
On Friday, the pre-k kids learned several new games from Ms. Sedeane. They were having so much fun they didn't even notice when the parents started arriving. When we got back to class to sing our goodbye song, they were all talking about how sweaty & tired they were. Success!

Next week our theme is Chinese New Year.
